Although Japan’s overall power score increased by 1.6 points in 2024, it was surpassed by India for the first time, causing its rank to decline from 3rd to 4th.
Japan scores best in diplomatic influence, where it ranked 2nd in 2024, pushing the United States to 3rd place.
Japan’s lowest scores are for resilience and future resources, for which it ranks 7th. While its score for resilience increased by four rankings, its score for future resources declined by two places.
Japan’s biggest improvement in a measure score in 2024 was for defence networks, where its increased activity with the United States and other regional partners saw its score rise by 13.1 points.
In 2024, Japan repeated its performance in 2023 by again recording a small improvement in its military capability, reflecting its changing regional role and slow emergence as a more prominent regional security actor.
Tokyo continues to be the quintessential smart power, using the country’s limited resources to wield broad-based influence in the region. Japan exerts more influence in the region than expected given its available resources, with its positive power gap increasing.
